Climate change is a hot button issue right now, as well it should be. But it isn’t just the climate change activists who have a role to play in ensuring that this ongoing crisis is slowed down. We all have a role to play. The Net Zero Investment Framework launch sought to include pensions schemes and other investors in making sure the future is better for the planet.

Investing In The Future

Launched by the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), the framework has thus far been adopted by thirty-six investors, who collectively manage assets that are worth over £6.1 trillion. They are banding together under this scheme to reduce carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050. It encourages the investors to manage their climate risks to help them to achieve this goal.

Speaking about this framework and what it will mean for the future, the UK Pensions Minister, Guy Opperman, said, “Bringing climate change to the top of the agenda and ensuring that Britain’s pension investments act on managing climate change risk will not only help the UK reach net zero, but ensure a brighter future for all.”

The Involvement Of Pension Schemes

Among these investors, there are a significant number of pension schemes, including some big names. This means that if you have a private pension account, you could be unknowingly supporting your pension scheme in this incredible task. These investors include large companies such as Northern Local Government Pension Scheme, Scottish Widows, Nest and the Church of England Pensions board, as well as many more.

What This Means For The Planet

This investment framework has been designed to keep to and deliver on the goal set by the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement aims to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius when compared to pre-industrial levels and hopefully below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This would mean that we could slow climate change and that we could reduce rising sea levels. Not only is this an excellent thing for the planet, but for anyone involved with these investors, it is an excellent sign of their ethics, values, and commitments.
