Accountants For Freelancers

Now that you’ve decided to become a freelancer, it’s important to start your business on the right footing to ensure its success.  Here we’ve presented 5 bullet points that you should take into consideration when working as a freelancer.

  1. Freelancing will require hard work!

You may have worked a 9-5 job before becoming a freelancer.  It’s important to note that you are now running your own business and the 9-5 hours will go out the window.  You may need to work long hours to get your business established especially when in the beginning you may not have much work coming in.

Once you have established a steady flow of clients it will become easier.

  1. Network Like Crazy and Ask for referrals

The larger your network of contacts, the more successful you are likely to be.  You need to be reaching out to former colleagues and associates and other business owners that could use your services.  Use social media in particular Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to reach out to potential customers.

As you successfully complete assignments and contracts, you should ask for referrals and recommendations.  You can use social media to showcase your recommendations and build your credibility.

  1. Build Your Brand

When you first start freelancing, you may not have a brand.  Your prospects may not know of the work and services that you offer.  Hence, it s extremely important to build your brand from the outset.

As a freelancer you are your brand and your reputation depends on how well you complete your assignments and the customer satisfaction derived from the work that you do for your clients.

Nowadays, it’s much easier to build your brand than it was say 10 years ago.  You can make use of the web and build your online presence very quickly.  As a minimum, you should complete your LinkedIn profile.  You should also create a Facebook page for your business.  If you have the time, you should also have a presence on Twitter and Google+ too.

Your website should reflect the services that you offer and link through to your social media profiles to complete the picture.

  1. Know your competition

By knowing your competitors, you can ensure that you have covered any gaps in the marketplace and can differentiate your products and services from those offered by others.  You need to monitor your competitors continuously to ensure that you remain at the top of your game.

  1. Get Good Advice

Your business is only as good as the team around you.  Your advisors should be the best that you can afford.  By choosing your team carefully, you will up your game and hence your success as a freelancer.

As a minimum, it’s very important to get a great accountant who can not only do your accounts, but can also offer you great business advice and access to a network that will help your business grow from strength to strength.
